We Had A Water Loss... Now What?

We Had A Water Loss... Now What?

We Had A Water Loss... Now What?

"We had a water loss... now what?" Should you put in a claim? One of the advantages to calling us if you have an emergency water loss is that we can help you determine the answer to this very question. Water losses range widely in price and it can sometimes be difficult as a homeowner to know if entering a claim is worth the downside. Insurance companies determine risk by looking at claims entered by their customers, even in situations where the policy does not pay out for damages.

Here’s what that means: if you put in a claim on your home, you will take a hit from your insurance company. If you’re going to take that hit, we should be sure that it’s a claim your insurance will actually pay! We have worked with customers in the past who have called their insurance agent, entered a claim, and the total payment to restore their home was less than their deductible. Yikes! Talk about really taking a hit.

Insurance Deductibles

Every home policy has a unique deductible value for losses to the home. A deductible in an insurance policy is the amount that you, as the homeowner, will pay to restore your home before the insurance company’s coverage will kick in. Higher deductibles on your policy result in a lower monthly insurance cost to you, as it represents less risk for the insurance company. So, having a high deductible can be good for homeowners who want to save money, and who also have a high risk tolerance.

However, if you have a higher deductible (say 2% of your home’s value), and you have a water loss, you may think about holding off on entering a claim. Here’s what you can do instead:

Call Delta Disaster Services First

We will get out to your property within the hour (often much faster). We will assess damages to your property – for free. We will set up just enough equipment to prevent further damages to your home (saving you money) – but we won’t do additional work until we talk with an adjuster from your insurance company (protecting you from potential downside). Finally, we will advise you, based on your deductible, whether or you should put in a claim.

Many insurance agencies around Grand Junction refer us for water damage. And they send their clients to us in part because we help people determine next steps, for free. We’ve been in the water damage restoration business in Grand Junction for five years. We’ve completed literally thousands of jobs. We are industry experts, and we can help you make the right decision for your unique situation.
