How We Determine Job Cost, Part 3

How We Determine Job Cost, Part 3

Since this is part 3 in this series, be sure to check out part 1 and part 2. They each cover very important foundational aspects of what we’re talking about in this post.

So far, we’ve talked about common concerns we hear on pricing, and Xactimate. Today we’ll wrap up this series by talking about insurance coverage and self-pay jobs.

Insurance Coverage – “Sudden and Accidental”

Disclaimer: every policy is written differently. The basics are the same, but every company has a unique coverage or exclusion method. Your best bet to get full details on your policy is to talk to your agent.

But we’re going to talk about some general knowledge applicable to all insurance policies. The keywords to trigger coverage on property insurance policies (HO policies – aka your home) are “sudden” and “accidental.”

What Constitutes Sudden and Accidental? Pipe burst, swamp cooler line break, sudden electrical fire, washing machine overflow… anything that wouldn’t be considered normal maintenance on a home, or that resulted from homeowner negligence.

Why do we bring this up with how we determine job cost? Insurance pays for most of the work we perform on a yearly basis. Most homeowners who call us are calling for water removal, dry-outs from sudden overflows, cleanups from pipe breaks… And if insurance is paying, the only cost to the homeowner is their deductible.

How Much Does Delta Restoration Services Cost?

A homeowner asks me how much the restoration project to their home is going to cost them. My response: “Your deductible.”

They continue by asking what happens if we find asbestos, or mold. Or what if the dry-out or cleanup takes longer than we expected. How much does it cost then?

My response: “Still, just your deductible. That’s what you pay. Insurance will cover the rest. You are not responsible for the rest of that payment. Your insurance company is. We will work with them to take care of the payment for you.”
