Emergency Service Basics
Emergency Service Basics
Since we recently held a CE class on Emergency Service Basics we thought we could provide a snapshot of what restoration services look like to those who aren’t in the industry. We often put on Continuing Education (CE) classes for insurance agents, realtors, and property managers to help them gain the credits required for their licenses. By teaching these classes we are also able to help educate our community should they ever have need of the kinds of services that our company provides.
What Is Mitigation?
“Mitigation is the prevention of future damage by taking personal and/or outside action. Insurance policies state that as the policyholder, you are responsible for mitigating damages and taking necessary measures to mitigate damages.”
Mitigation is often the first step for us in performing emergency services. The word mitigation in our industry also covers a wide variety of services. Water, fire, and mold are the primary three.
Water Damage and Flooding
Leaks can start in a house from many sources. Refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers, and swamp coolers are all common origin points of water damage. Unless dried quickly and properly water can permanently damage a home’s structure or contents.
Fire and Smoke Damage
Even small fires in a home can lead to extensive damage. The smoke alone caused from the fire can spread throughout a home and cause serious problems. Smoke is acidic and will destroy rubbers, plastics, and metals unless properly cleaned, quickly. The fire itself can erode the structural integrity of a home, even if it isn’t completely burned down. In the picture below you can see the temporary shoring needed to keep this home standing upright, following a fire.
Mold and Microbial Growth
Believe us – just because we live in a very dry climate does not mean that mold is uncommon. Mold growth requires only three main elements: moisture, oxygen, and a food source (such as drywall, as shown in the picture below). Especially in a warm environment, such as your home, mold colonies can begin to form in as little as 24 hours. The best way to prevent this? If you have water damage in your home, make sure it’s dried properly by hiring a professional restoration company like ours.
